For the past year and a half my wife, Tiffany, has been working in child-care facilities with many other women, mostly non-Christians or non-practicing “Christians”. I’ve been amazed at her ability to influence her co-workers by bringing up God in her conversations and by living like Christ in her workplace. She always mentions God when her co-workers bring up tough situations in life and she’s always reading her Bible when she has time at work, which stirs up curiosity and great conversations.
I know a man in Miami, FL who is one of the best evangelists I’ve known. His name is Mike Hoots, and one of the phrases he always says, and that has stuck with me, is the concept that “the Gospel is Christianity’s best kept secret.” Hurtful, to hear, but very true. We have faith and we participate in activities that we believe mean living out our faith, but they are mostly inside the body. So instead of living our faith out, many of us live our faith in. I’ve been so guilty of not living out my faith in certain environments. Places where it’s just easier not to live out my faith. Most of the times it’s just easier to keep our faith a secret.
Today was my wife’s last day of work since we are moving to New Mexico soon. She got a gift bag and a card from a co-worker that she made an impact on over the last six months, which was very special to her. There was a line in the card that made me so proud of my wife, yet served as a wake up call for me. Her co-worker wrote: “you have lived out your faith which has brought honor to your Lord.”
I’m not sure at what point in her faith Tiffany’s co-worker is right now, but this I know: My wife lived out her faith in a place where it would have just been easier not to, and because of that she impacted someone’s life to some extent.
If you live out your faith like my wife does, thank you so much for the example! If you don’t I pray you and I can learn from my wife and all those that do.
Blessings,
Daniel Coutinho
